Frequently Asked Questions
Many of the questions you may have about suitability, strength, wear time, and expected results are best answered at a consultation with your dentist, who will assess your oral health, confirm you’re a suitable candidate, and advise on the right regime for your teeth. The FAQs below cover the practical questions about our products, how they work, ordering, and storage.
What is carbamide peroxide?
Carbamide peroxide is the active ingredient in professional teeth whitening gel. It breaks down into hydrogen peroxide on contact with saliva, releasing oxygen molecules that penetrate the tooth enamel and break apart stain molecules from within. It’s the same compound used in dental practice for decades.
What's the difference between carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide?
Carbamide peroxide releases hydrogen peroxide slowly over several hours, making it well suited to overnight tray whitening. Hydrogen peroxide acts faster but dissipates more quickly. Most professional take-home systems use carbamide peroxide for this reason.
What concentrations do you supply?
16% and 22% carbamide peroxide gel, in 10ml syringes.
Which strength is right for me?
Your dentist is best placed to advise following an examination.
How much gel do I use per session?
Approximately 0.25ml per tray. A 10ml syringe provides up to 40 individual tray treatments.
Will the gel damage my enamel?
No. Professional-strength carbamide peroxide gel does not damage tooth enamel when used as directed.
Will it work on crowns, veneers, fillings, or bonding?
No. Whitening gel only affects natural tooth enamel. It will not change the colour of any dental restorations.
Is ProWhiteSmile gel the same as dentist-supplied gel?
The active ingredient — carbamide peroxide — is the same. Dentist-supplied gel, ProWhiteSmile gel, and other professional brands all use the same compound. Differences between products come down to formulation details and concentration.
Do I need custom trays?
For best results, yes. Custom-made trays moulded to your teeth hold the gel in consistent contact with every tooth surface and minimise gel contact with the gums. Off-the-shelf trays don’t achieve the same fit or consistency.
Can I use my existing dental trays?
Yes, provided they are custom-made and fit correctly.
How do I apply the gel?
Apply a small amount into each tooth-shaped space in the tray — approximately 0.25ml. Seat the tray over your teeth and wipe away any excess gel that contacts the gums.
Can I eat or drink while wearing the trays?
No. Remove trays before eating or drinking anything other than water.
Will my teeth feel sensitive?
Some sensitivity during whitening is common. If it concerns you, speak to your dentist.
What results can I expect?
Results vary considerably depending on the cause and extent of the staining, the natural shade of the teeth, and how consistently the product is used. Some staining lifts quickly — slightly yellowed teeth typically respond fastest. Deeper, darker, or older staining takes longer and may be more resistant. Your dentist will be able to give you a realistic indication based on an examination.
How long do results last?
This varies by individual and lifestyle. Coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking all accelerate restaining. Top-up sessions using existing trays and a fresh syringe of gel maintain results easily.
Who should not use whitening gel?
Anyone with untreated decay, exposed roots, active gum disease, or significant dental restorations should have these addressed before whitening. Not suitable for under 18s or during pregnancy or breastfeeding without prior advice from a dentist or GP.
How should I store the gel?
In a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Refrigeration extends shelf life. Do not use gel that has visibly changed in colour, consistency, or smell.
Can I travel with the gel?
Yes — keep it away from direct sunlight and temperature extremes.
Where do you ship to?
Across the UK and internationally.
How long does delivery take?
UK orders are shipped by Royal Mail 48. We aim to dispatch every working day.
What if my order arrives damaged?
Contact us and we will arrange a replacement.
How long have you been trading?
Since 2004 — over twenty years. We are one of the UK’s longest-established specialist suppliers of professional-strength carbamide peroxide whitening gel.
Are you UK-based?
Yes. We have a published UK address and a verifiable trading history going back over two decades.
Do you have customer reviews?
Yes — genuine Google reviews from verified customers.
Why don't you make specific claims about results?
Because whitening results are individual. The cause of staining, the natural shade of the teeth, and consistency of use all determine what’s achievable. We’d rather give you accurate information than make promises we can’t keep for every customer.
